BRISTOL COMIC EXPO

13/05/2013

Okay so I was back from this years Bristol Comic Expo. The 1st show I ever went to as a fan and eventually as an industry insider.

So what do I think?  I thought it was great.  It was definatley busier than last time, and although I did not hang around for the Sunday last year. This year there were decent numbers on this day, which is a one of the difficult things for any 2 day show.

The Saturday started with being asked to draw a Slag.  A Dinobot Slag that is, after all this was a comiccon!  From there the requests came thick and fast & a nice mix they were too.  Optimus Prime, Game of Thrones, Loki, Hellcat, Wolverine, Deadpool, Quentin Quire, a nice mix indeed.

There of course was a tricky one, there always is. Iron Man, Full Colour, but within his latest movie garb.  Now Iron Man's not a problem but have you seen the level of tech on his new armour?

Yep Tricky.

It worked out just fine though.

Normally at a show I would be locked behind the table for the full weekend.  This time however I was asked to join a panel on Nostalgia in Comics and quite interesting it was too.  I was joined with my good pal's John-Paul Bove & Liam Shalloo for the talk.  We had a few laughs and all found it far deeper than we expected.  The last contributer made the greatest observation. Wether Nostalgia will actually disapear.  As with this internet age, nothing truley disapears and everything is accessable.  So we never really have time to miss or remaniss about anything anymore.  As it is always there, readily available.

Overall this was a good show.  Not as busy or as intense as the larger shows.  But it did have a nice feel to it.  People had time to chat, get sketches, and have a browse around, without being overwhelmed.  I like the direction it is heading and personally think they did a great job.

Long live Bristol Expo!

Another Weekend, another show though this time it was local.  The Memorabilia show was the 1st venue I ever sketched in Public. Though this was way back when The 'Draw The World Together' Charity was there sponsored by NCSOFT.  Back then I was drawing under the charities banner with requests from City of Heroes.

Fast Forward the last few years and the Memorabilia has now become the MCM Birmingham Comic Con.  Although the name Memorabilia and branding is still there, how long will it last?

All I know is the Show didn't just seem busier, it was busier. More people were in attendance at the show than I have seen in many years. With long cues to get into the venue and an interesting crowd of new younger people added in to the mix. Many of the people I had spoke to had never been to the show before, this was there 1st time at the MCM show and the 1st time they had attended a Comic Con.  It was great to see so many were in awe of the event.

I was kindly asked to draw a nice mix of sketches, a few of which are posted on here.  Some I forgot to photograph, such as a Tubby Dr Octopus wearing a Superior Spider-Man suit that didn't quite fit. I enjoyed Drawing Howard the Duck's alter egos, plus others such as Zombie Prime & Supergirl.

A good show and I met some great people in the process.  All in all a very successful weekend!

Being prepped on the friday was a good way to prepare for the Saturday, because it was Insane!  Locked in place for the day there was no let up.  Sketch followed Sketch,  each different and diverse yet equally challenging.

There were a few of the regular requests, Optimus Prime, Spider-man, Venom, but I was kept in check with
some of the sketches that were asked for.

Wether it be Cat-woman on Red:
MOVIE FrenZY "Not G1!"
Or even a portrait of a quirky young lady with the'EYE of SAURON' on her head. :)

Yep I sketched it all.

This Event seems to get bigger and better with every show and the cosplay has now become such an integral part, it now also seems to be filtering into my sketches.  I guess the show now just would not be the same without it.

Okay, what do I say about this last weekend?
Well, I had a lot of fun :)

A big part of which was down to the great people that attend these shows.  Opposite is The Scooby Gang from Mystery Inc. that helped look after my wears while I went on a secret mission.

Shhh can't tell you, it's a secret.

What I can tell you about is the show.  I decided to travel down and attend the friday as it had an early opening from 2-7.  Straight away I was sketching, and one of the early sketches set the tone for the weekend.  Hulk vs. Steam-punk Chicken on a burning train.  Ok' I can do that.

As seen below :D
