London Film & ComicCon AFTERMATH

7/11/2013

Finally I am getting chance to do a Quick post about last weekends Film & Comic Con, otherwise known as The London Film & Comic Con! See what I did there?  I gave the location and made it sound all spiffy in one go!

Ain't I Amazing.

There was a Special Preview Opening on the Friday Evening this time, 9-6 which I am glad I went to. Not only did it enable me to be prepared & ready for the weekend, but it meant I got the chance to start sketching early.

Boy did I need it!  I ended up sketching all Friday evening, then had to carry on with the orders until 2.00am in the early morning!  4 hours later I was back up & getting ready for the Saturday morning start.

I hoped to pick up a morning breakfast in the Green Room, unfortunately there was no food at that time, so I just had an early morning Hot Chocolate alongside David Prowse. That's (Darth Vader) for the uninitiated.

Danny Glover, Jason Momoa, David Hasselhoff, the Green Room was full of famous faces, the only thing I had time to do though was fill my face full of chicken & get straight back to my table.  No rest, chatting, or chilling out for us Artist types you know!

Not only did I reach burnout by the end of the Saturday, but I also ended up sketching until 2.00am again. Hey I'm a Professional, that's what we do!

All in All it was a fabulous show. Exhausting but Fab & I got everyone's sketches finished too!

Until Next Time!

MCM LONDON COMIC CON REVIEW

5/29/2013

Picture
I can draw Prime and Megatron in my sleep. Though I honesty I always still enjoy drawing both.  Spiderman verses Michelangelo was one of the more unusual requests, but also a lot of fun to do.  This along with Harley Quinn verses Optimus Prime was one of my favorites.

(Yes that's right, Harley Quinn vs Optimus Prime!)

Unfortunately my camera decided to quit on me.  Many of the pictures came out blurred and many others decided not to work at all.  Time for new equipment I think, it has served me well over it's time, bless it.

The thing I really like about these shows are the people I meet.  Everyone is friendly and everyone does there best to go out of there way to be nice to each other.  All those on the outside that make disparaging remarks about these sort of shows or the people that attend, shame on them, the people with bad attitudes ruin things for themselves.  That is probably why they are so bitter.

I got to say I enjoyed the hell out of this show, even if it has taken the last two days to recover from it!

There was several cool things from this weekend for me, doing a Spiderman as Sherlock Sketch Cover, which Dan Slott the writer of Spiderman re-tweeted:

Picture

All in all what a great show and what great people.  Although I came away exhausted at the end of it, Ive also come away reinvigorated from the fantastic feedback and responses from con goers and fans alike.

While people enjoy the work and gain pleasure from it, who am I to deprive them.  It would be Criminal!

Here's a few of the happy folks I sketched for, apologies to those not on here, I will make sure I have a fully working Camera with me next time!

MCM London Comic Con.  Every time I think a show has reached a new limit, out comes another show and pulls the rug from under my perceptions.  I arrived early on Friday for set-up and I am glad I did.  The pressure of Setting up and interacting with the public on a Saturday morning whilst also trying to sketch is something best avoided.  Making Friday the best time to be prepared for the weekend ahead.

My what a weekend, I've seen busy before and this was something else.  I did this same show at the same time last year, but this had to be a new record.  A few people told me they had been queuing from  11.00 until 2.00 just to get in the main hall, & I gotta say that is dedication!

The nice thing about doing these shows is the complete mix of requests I receive.  It makes it challenging, but it also pushes me out of my comfort zone.  I gotta say this time I felt I took the sketches to a new level.  I spent a bit more time on each, but felt it was well worth it overall.

I had a lot of fun, due to the challenging requets!

Also getting a Gift of a Wolverine Sketch from Callum Crabb aged 6, whilst wearing his Spiderman Outfit.  He has one of my sketches above his desk, keep up the good work Callum!

Added to that a lovely message from Andrew Fernandes on my Facebook wall:
Lee Bradley was such a complete and utter gent when meeting him at Comic con London. Such a talented artist that I admire and respect! Lee was so approachable and encouraging with the work I had to show - his feedback and advice really left me inspired. I'm going to work much harder at making my dream a reality!
Check out this amazing piece of art he drew for me! Optimus Prime! — with Lee Bradley.

BRISTOL COMIC EXPO

Okay so I was back from this years Bristol Comic Expo. The 1st show I ever went to as a fan and eventually as an industry insider.

So what do I think?  I thought it was great.  It was definatley busier than last time, and although I did not hang around for the Sunday last year. This year there were decent numbers on this day, which is a one of the difficult things for any 2 day show.

The Saturday started with being asked to draw a Slag.  A Dinobot Slag that is, after all this was a comiccon!  From there the requests came thick and fast & a nice mix they were too.  Optimus Prime, Game of Thrones, Loki, Hellcat, Wolverine, Deadpool, Quentin Quire, a nice mix indeed.

There of course was a tricky one, there always is. Iron Man, Full Colour, but within his latest movie garb.  Now Iron Man's not a problem but have you seen the level of tech on his new armour?

Yep Tricky.

It worked out just fine though.

Normally at a show I would be locked behind the table for the full weekend.  This time however I was asked to join a panel on Nostalgia in Comics and quite interesting it was too.  I was joined with my good pal's John-Paul Bove & Liam Shalloo for the talk.  We had a few laughs and all found it far deeper than we expected.  The last contributer made the greatest observation. Wether Nostalgia will actually disapear.  As with this internet age, nothing truley disapears and everything is accessable.  So we never really have time to miss or remaniss about anything anymore.  As it is always there, readily available.

Overall this was a good show.  Not as busy or as intense as the larger shows.  But it did have a nice feel to it.  People had time to chat, get sketches, and have a browse around, without being overwhelmed.  I like the direction it is heading and personally think they did a great job.

Long live Bristol Expo!

COMIC LEGEND in GERMANY

5/8/2013

Picture
Last week I was invited over to Germany to promote the release of Iron Man 3.  It was a special 2 Film Event starting with The Avengers leading into it's direct follow up featuring ol' Shell-Head himself.  Although Originally I was supposed watch Both Films & sketch Before, After & during the Interval. As per usual it turned into a Sketchathon until the end of the event.

Quick lucky really as it turned out both films were playing in German with no subtitles. Would have been an interesting experience, but I may have dodged a Bullet there. :D
I can say upon viewing IRON MAN 3 in good old Blighty, it's a Blast!

I had a great experience at the show and everyone was extremely friendly, despite the language barrier.  Big thanks to Stephan Prietzel for acting as my German agent on that one.   It was quite interesting to see the difference in the sketch requests at an overseas event compared to a UK one. Gone was the usual IronMan, Batman, Hulk etc.. here the majority of people wanted themselves as superheroes.  Which was quite fun to do.

I got the odd unusual request such as a full colour Wolverine chilling on a beach while the Silver Surfer rides waves.

Translation:
Comic Legend at the "SpreeCinema"

Hey I don't write this stuff so don't blame me.
Picture
One of the nice things about an Event like this is the Experience.  Although I had a Hotel Room booked, turns out I didn't need it.  After the Organizers took us out for a slap up meal. Rump Steak mmmm... & don't forget drinks. We headed back to the Cinema around one in the morning. Pitch Black Outside, up come the shutters & in we go. Cinema Lock-In! Out comes the Whiskey, helpings of pop-corn & whatever I want from behind the counter.

As well as looking around the Cinema of a night & having a nose around the projection rooms, we chatted & swapped stories over Whiskey & Ice Cream until six in the morning. Great memories and it makes me realize how lucky I am as I get the chance to do things that most people will never get to do.

Then it was time for my flight!

Spree Cinema, be seeing you soon!
